Deck additions are one of the most common home improvement projects in the country, and for good reason! Decks improve curb appeal, increase living space, and increase resale value! To maximize the benefits of your deck, ask yourself the following questions prior to construction. Then, consult with the expert deck builders at LPB Construction Inc. We’ll put our decades of construction experience to use to create a beautiful, quality deck for your home.
If your yard is sloped and your home sits more than one foot above the ground, a deck is the best option for you. Alternatively, patios are ideal if your door opens at ground level and your yard is flat. Many homes incorporate both features by building a deck that covers or leads to a patio.
Understanding the purpose of the deck will help you to decide on the size of the space. If you simply want to sit outside and soak in the beauty of nature, a small deck will suffice. Alternatively, if you plan to dine and entertain outside, you’ll need a larger deck. If your deck is going to receive a lot of sun or lacks privacy, consider adding a roof, pergola, or other features to create shade and privacy.
If you plan to eat on the deck, you’ll want to locate it as close to the kitchen as possible. This may require the addition of a door, however, which can significantly increase the cost of the project. Also, consider privacy, shade, and view before finalizing the design.
There are two main options for deck materials: pressure-treated wood and composite decking. Wood is the traditional choice of decking material and creates a natural appeal. Wood, however, is prone to cracking, fading, and splintering if not routinely maintained. Composite decking comes in many shades and textures, and requires little more than light cleaning. Composite decking is more expensive to install, though.
